Malaysians and friends of Malaysia are invited to join a heartfelt and powerful community event at Stadium Merdeka Kuala Lumpur on 16 August 2025.
“We need 100 passionate Malaysians and friends of Malaysia to help us achieve a monumental goal – to collectively walk one million steps in celebration of our nation’s 68th Independence Day,” said Nikki Yeo, Cofounder of Move8.org, a fitness advocacy platform.
On Saturday, 16 August 2025, all are invited to the grounds where Malaysia was born: the historic Stadium Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur. “This isn’t just a walk; it’s a way to commemorate the space, a UNESCO-heritage listed site that cradles our nation now managed under the purview of the Merdeka and experience the echoes of “Merdeka!” by the first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman.
From 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, we’ll walk a total of 11,000 steps each, making 20 rounds of the 400-meter track. By coming together, we can symbolically retrace the steps of our forefathers and walk towards a shared, unified future.
This is your chance to be more than a spectator. We want to hear your voice! Our film crew will be on-site all day to capture “vox pops” (voice of the public) on the theme, “What Merdeka Means to Me.” We believe every Malaysian’s story is a vital thread in our national tapestry. Share your personal journey, your memories, and your hopes for the future.
𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐞8 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐤𝐚 edition will be attended by friends from the not-for-profit sector, Malaysian Association for the Blind, Malaysian Blind Sports Association (official), Malaysian Federation of the Deaf, VTOC (Vocational Training Opportunity Center) and more.
A virtual goodie bag awaits those who complete the task of circling the stadium twenty times to clock in 11,000 steps or 8KM.
Can’t be there in person? You can still be a part of this movement! Share your own story on social media using the hashtags #mymerdeka, #stadiummerdeka, and #move8.
